Buying an MX5 is great but enjoying it with other MX5 owners is simply spectacular. There’s plenty of MX5 owners clubs in the UK and Ireland but in this article, I’ll share my experience of MX5 NI and hopefully inspire some of you to get out there and drive with some friends!
The cars
The most immediate thing that you’ll notice when pulling up to an event is the sheer variety on show. Anything and everything from a bone stock NC MX5 to a bagged 300hp+ turbo NB. Every car has its own unique style and it’s a great way to generate ideas for potential modifications for your own car in the future.
I almost always see a set of wheels on an NB MX5 that I previously wasn’t aware of but look amazing. The great thing about this is that you can look at the wheel specs of that car and hopefully get a set for yourself that looks just as perfect. Then there’s the simple modifications like actual working cupholders instead of the MX5’s mediocre stock ones.
On top of that, you get to see 20-30 MX5s bobbing and weaving through the countryside all around you which is quite a spectacle to be a part of. All of them making great noises, everyone in them smiling.
The people
Speaking of people smiling, the attendees are always fantastic at MX5 NI’s events. I had presumed that, with it essentially being an owner’s club, that my car would get slated for having some patches of rust and people would care about every little detail however, that’s certainly not the case. In fact, it’s almost like an MX5s anonymous meeting at times as people share their experiences with rust and having the back end of the car swing out at the wrong times.
Another useful part of talking to the owners is that a lot of them will have already experienced issues that you’re facing for the first time. I’ve had members diagnose my car on numerous occasions for wheel bearing issues, power steering issues, and rust issues and each diagnosis has been extremely helpful with the ownership experience.
You also get to hear about how each modification has performed for a specific owner and can get a really useful insight into how beneficial it may be for you. You’ll always find someone that has a modification you never knew you needed. Like extra soundproofing for road trips, a stunning metal fuel cap or a unique aftermarket spoiler.
The roads
For MX5 NI’s driving events they often try to include some breathtaking drives. I for one had never driven around Spelga dam and was blown away by the views, hairpin turns and the sheer amount of fun to be had on them. You’ll get to experience roads that you wouldn’t have ever considered driving on and that’s where some of the best surprises lie.
The driving etiquette is a very chill one since everyone likes to stay as a group. Most people like to stay in and around the speed limit but of course, some bits of spirited driving are included on the more interesting stretches of tarmac. I can’t recommend the driving days enough, the chaos that you cause driving through small towns with 30 MX5s is hilarious and you get a chance to properly stretch the legs of your car.
A great bit about the drives is that you also stop off at various locations. This allows everyone to relax for a little bit after some intense driving, recount funny and interesting moments from the trip, as well as letting other MX5s join along the way. It stops the day from being solely about driving and lets you get to know the drivers around you a lot better.
The cost
Finances are always a cause for concern, especially if you’re a university student like myself. With that said, the costs for these events are minimal. You’ll spend about £30 on petrol and potentially £5 if there’s some sort of barbecue but that’s a small price to pay for a day of chatting with your mates, driving spectacular roads and getting to see some of the coolest MX5s in the country
Conclusion
If you have the ability to join MX5 NI or indeed any MX5 car club. DO IT! From my experience, MX5 owners are some of the most approachable light-hearted car enthusiasts around. It’s rare that anyone comes to an event with a big ego or makes anyone feel unwelcome. The knowledge that you gain about your car will be invaluable and above all, you’ll meet some fantastic personalities that might end up being great friends. I’ll say it again, DO IT!!!
Brilliant write up on the mx5 club!
